Timely Yours - August 2014
Dear Partners,

The British planter community during their rule in India were mostly Scots. It was they who affectionately called Coorg ‘The Scotland of India’ because of the many uncanny similarities.
Both Scotland and Coorg were cold, misty, mountainous regions. Both had potent local brews. Both thought of themselves as being very distinct from their neighbours.

The land of Coffee, Cardamom, Oranges and great warriors. The land of Hills, Waterfalls, lush green rain forests where nature still survives in abundance.

This month we bring to you Coorg, as the destination of the month.

India among world's top 5 medical tourism hotspots

India is one among the top five medical tourist spots in the world having hosted nearly 166,000 medical tourists from across the globe in 2012, said a PHD Chamber’s Medical and Wellness Tourism Report.
The medical tourism industry in India is expected to reach an estimated value of $6 billion (360,600 million) by 2018, it added according to a news item in The Hindustan Times.
“The growth of medical tourism in India has led to the enhancement of better and advanced medical facilities in the country. More tourists are coming to India because cost of treatment here is much less compared to the US and the European countries. We are also trying to integrate medical tourism with normal tourism,” said Mr. Parvez Dewan, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
“The guidelines for the new electronic visa has been finalized last week and we are also in support of offering incentives for the promotion of medical and wellness tourism,” he added.
The report further mentions that highly-skilled doctors coupled with improvement in medical infrastructure are attracting medical tourists.

COORG - The Scotland Of India

The British planter community were mostly Scots. It was they who affectionately called Coorg ‘The Scotland of India’ because of the many uncanny similarities. Both Scotland and Coorg were cold, misty, mountainous regions. Both had potent local brews. Both thought of themselves as being very distinct from their neighbours. They loved their independence, their dances, rough sport, a good hunt and a fierce fight. The Scots and the Coorgs, stood their ground almost right through their history against vastly superior neighbouring kingdoms.
The Coorgs, like the Scots are divided into clans. There the Stuart and the MacLeary, here the Pattamada and the Kambiranda. The clans warred constantly in both lands, in the early days, fortunately clan memories are short and today there is complete peace.
Both the Scots and the Coorgs had, actually still have, a distinctive dress. Though worn on ceremonial occasions today - the knee length kilt and the knee length kupya, were designed for quick movement in wet, grassy hills.
A love of arms…while the Scots had their dirks (short daggers), the Coorgs had their peechekathis, carved, sheathed daggers which they kept tucked into the cotton cummerbunds, which held together the wraparound cloaks they wore.
If Scotland has the Highland Games, Coorg has its own flavour of the same. Rough and tumble contests, including the ritual sharp-shooting of coconuts placed on trees during the Festival of Arms. And what is probably the largest hockey tournament in the world. Over 300 clans compete for the Coorg Family Cup ever year.
Fittingly, many of the estates in Coorg have Scottish names. Names that roll off the tongue like the rain off the red tiled roofs. Names that remind you of childhood, of days gone by, when things were slow, gentle and perfect. Dalquarren, Craigmore, Dunkeld, Glenmore…sometimes the semi-Indian name like Coover Colly (‘colly’ means a ‘little pond’ here). Or the local but curious names like Nari Kad, meaning Tiger’s Forest. And Karadi Gud which means Bear Cave.

The land of Coffee, Cardamom, Oranges and great warriors. The land of Hills, Waterfalls, lush green rain forests where nature still survives in abundance. Situated in the western ghats at about 1400 mtrs above sea level, it is an ideal setting for an exotic holiday. Coorg is also home to the Kodavas, the famous warriors. The Kodavas still follow a life style full of rich traditions and culture. Unlike the other Dravidians, the Kodavas are distinctly tall and fair complexioned.

Location
The hilly district of Coorg in Karnataka is land locked . It is a comfortable 05 hours drive from Bangalore - 242 kms. The nearest rail head is Mysore - 100kms. The coastal town of Mangalore is just 132 kms. Coorg offers pleasant temperate climate throughout the year. Even in peak summers the mercury does not soar beyond 30 degrees Celsius. That makes it an ideal getaway for a holiday throughout the year.
Coorg is known for its hospitability of people and beautiful scenery. This is one of the best destinations for nature lover in India. Tourists get fascinated by colourful scenery, wooded slopes, undulating landscape and quaint villages of Coorg. There are endless mountain ranges which attract thousands of tourists every year.

Places of Visit

Abbey falls

A big attraction for tourists and filmdom alike is the Abbey Falls, 8 km from Madikeri. Even during the summer there is plenty of water in these falls. The roar of the falls can be heard from the main road, from where a path goes through lovely coffee and cardamom plantations right up to them. The chirping of innumerable birds which are easier heard then seen, fill the air with sweet music. Do remember to take your binoculars and camera when you go there. As of Mar 2011, bathing in the falls is not allowed as the water pours into the rocky steep valley.

Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary

Pushpagiri aka Kumaraparvatha trek path, Kodagu, 2009., Kodagu/Coorg.
Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctury is 30 km from Somwarpet towards Kukke Subramanya. The Wildlife Sanctury is a apt for trekkers who want to experience the wilderness of Western Ghat. Home for different kinds of wild species like elephants, deers, wild cats etc.

Madikeri

Madikeri is the capital of the Kodagu also known as Coorg. This place is known as the “Scotland of India”. Millions of tourists come to this place to visit coffee plantations, lush green forests, misty hills and some breath taking views of other areas. Madikeri is also known for it's amazing climate. Madikeri also has a world record in the production of cardamom crop.

Dubare - Elephant Camp

This is mainly an elephant capturing and training camp of the Forest Department, at the edge of Dubare forest, on the bank of river Kaveri, on the Kushalnagar - Siddapur road. The largest land animal is captured here with the help of tamed elephants and local tribals - the Kurbas - and is held captive for upto 6 months in large teak wood cages.

Iruppu Falls

There is a sacred spot called Iruppu in south Kodagu on the Brahmagiri range of hills. River Lakshmana-tirtha flows nearby. Legend says that Rama and Lakshmana, warrior Gods, passed this way while searching for Rama's consort, Sita. Rama asked Lakshmana to fetch some drinking water for him. Lakshmana shot an arrow into the Brahmagiri hills and brought into being river Lakshmanatirtha. Also the river is said to be blesed with powers of cleansing one's soul, it is an important pilgrim point for many devotees and a temple dedicated to Lord Ram is a few km below.

The river descends perpendicularly into a great cataract known as the Iruppu Falls. This place is believed to possess the power to cleanse one's sins and is visited by thousands of devotees from far and near on Shivaratri day. There is temple dedicated to Sri Ram, surrounded by paddy fields, from where it is a climb up to the falls through natural forest. This place can be visited from Gonikopal on the way to Nagerhole National Park by taking a detour after Srimangala, situated in the Kutta Road.

Nagarhole National Park

Nagarhole, in kannada means Snake River, but there are not too many snakes at this place. This park was created by former king for their hunting adventure. Nagarhole provides best natural habitat for different wildlife animals like tigers, elephant, panthers and many more. Mostly found animals here are wild dogs, gaur, langur and deer.
