Dear Partners,
Amongst the other lesser known
treasures of India, is Madikeri in the Western Ghats. The
enchanting fragrance of coffee……. The aroma of fresh cardamom,
Black pepper and Coorg honey..... The holy river Cauvery…… The air
is noticeably cool. It is perhaps, this climate and hilly terrain
of Coorg, that inspired the British to occupy this area for over
100 years and they called it as Scotland of India. It is also
known as the Kashmir of the south India for its scenic beauty.
This month we bring to you, Madikeri
, Karnataka, as the destination of the month.

Gujarat plans airport at Dholavira in
Kutch |
As per a report, the Gujarat
government is planning to construct and develop an airport at
Dholavira in Kutch district, one of the two largest Harappan
sites in the country and also a “paradise” for bird-watchers, to
connect it to the national circuit for promoting tourism.
Saurabh Patel, Minister for Tourism, Government of Gujarat, said
the government has already identified 11 airstrips, including
Ambaji, Palitana, Ankleshwar, Dwarka, Mandvi (Kutch), Morbi,
Rajkot, Parsoli, Rajpipla, Dholavira and Dahej, for the purpose
of setting up the airport.
“The government also wants to promote tourism through
intra-state aviation service that will cover routes like
Ahmedabad-Surat-Bhavnagar, Bhuj-Rajkot-Ahmedabad,
Ahmedabad-Porbandar-Jamnagar, Kandla-Mandvi-Amreli-Ahmedabad and
Ahmedabad-Keshod-Diu,” the Minister added.
“Kutch district has a long history, dating from the Harappan
civilisation that had thrived at Dholavira in the 2nd and 3rd
Millennia BC to the Jadeja Rajput rulers, who reigned from 1540s
till the merger of states in 1940s, and endowed their princely
state with forts, palaces, temples and other monuments of
historic and religious importance,” Patel said.
The district is currently hosting the ‘Rann Festival’ (desert
festival) which was inaugurated at Dhordo village last week by
Gujarat Chief Minister Anandi Patel. Patel said the cultural
extravaganza has been drawing tourists from across the country
and also from abroad in droves with each passing year. “Kutch is
the habitat of the endangered and other wildlife species like
the Indian wild ass. This district is known as the paradise for
bird-watchers and is also the breeding ground for
critically-endangered birds like Indian Bustard and Lesser
Florican,” said Patel.

With no water, Keoladeo faces an uncertain
future
|
The Keoladeo National Park, a
world heritage site in Bharatpur and home to some 364 species of
birds, including the rare Siberian crane, is in for a
catastrophe. With water bodies around the park drying up, no
fish to feed, no nests to be raised, the park wears a deserted
look.
Recently, the open-billed storks and painted storks which came
to Keoladeo, commenced breeding but unable to find food,
abandoned their nests and flew back. On October 6 this year, TOI
had carried a story titled, "Keoladeo faces survival threat"
highlighting possibility of birds abandoning the park. Now it
has come true as forest officials paid no heed to the issue.
More serious is the recent visit of Unesco team, which filmed
the park to report its current condition. Keoladeo is a Unesco
registered world heritage site.
A Ramsar and World Heritage Site of international repute,
Keoladeo faces continuous threats for its survival due to
absence of flowing water, which was traditionally received from
the Gambhir river. The river went dry more than a decade ago
owing to construction of Panchana dam in Karauli. So, the river
flows only when Panchana dam overflows, which happened only
thrice in past 12 years.

The echo of her heroes and her freedom fighters is felt not just in India but also all over the world. It is the land of “Ahimsa” the land of Mahatma Gandhi.
